Create a Horror Face in Photoshop

Filed Under (Graphic Design, Photoshop) by Dave on 08-23-2008

Tagged Under : Blend modes, Zombie Face

Its not quite Halloween but I wanted to write a tutorial on turning a photo of a face into a Zombie or Horror face. Lets start by opening a photo that is a somewhat closeup of someones face.  You can use the one I’m using by downloading it here:  [Face] . Here is the dried mud texture I’m using for the face: [Dried mud].

Ok, with the picture loaded up in Photoshop, double click the background layer in the layers palette to activate the alpha channel and name it Background. FYI – If your not sure where the layers palette is, go to Window>Layers and select it to open the layers palette,  you’ll see that the picture you loaded will be the background layer.  Select the pen tool and set it to path in the above tool bar. Zoom in on the face to about 300% and trace around the face with the pen tool.

After you’ve traced the face with the pen tool hit Ctrl +Enter to create a selection of the face.

The next four steps in order:

1. hit Ctrl +c to copy the selection into the clipboard

2. hit Ctrl +Shift +i to invert the selection

3. Apply a layer mask to the background layer to mask out the face  (layer mask icon is at the bottom of the layers palette).

4. Create a new layer above the background layer, name it face and hit Ctrl +V to copy the face into the face layer.

Then you’ll probably have to reposition the face and line it up correctly. If all goes well your picture should look exactly like the original photo except you have an additional layer of just the face.

With the face layer selected hit Shift +Ctrl +U to desaturate.

Now you can bring in the dried mud texture. Open the texture in Photoshop and drag it into your face document (it should be on top of all other layers). If your using the texture I supplied, its pretty big so you have to size it down. Temporarily lower the opacity of the mud texture so you can see what area of the mud you want over the face then hit Ctrl +T to bring up the transform tool, Scale an position the dried mud where you want it.

When you get it where you want, hit enter to apply and raise the opacity of the dried mud back up to 100%.

With the mud layer selected in the layers palette, Ctrl +click the “thumbnail” of the face layer in the layers palette to create a selection.  Apply a layer mask to the mud layer by clicking on the icon an the bottom of the layer palette and set the blend mode to Color Burn.

Select the “layer mask Thumbnail” of the dried mud layer and take the blur tool from the tools palette and soften the edges a little around the face. Then take the Sponge tool and paint/scrub on the neck to bring in a little texture.

Select the Face layer and take the burn tool from the tools palette and darken a little around the Eye and the corner of the mouth.

Then select the background layer and use the burn tool again to darken the hair and neck area ( use a soft brush at about 80px.

Next, Select the “Layer mask Thumbnail” of the dried mud layer. Select the paint brush and make sure your forground is set to black and paint around the pupil and iris to reveal the original eye. You can easily give the eye some color by creating a colored circle around the iris and changing the blend mode to overlay.  I like the darkish gray look so I won’t do that in this tutorial.

In this last step we’ll add just a touch of the levels adjustment to make the face just a little more erie looking.  Select the face layer and go to Image>Adjustments>levels and just move the black and gray values slightly or just play around with the values to get it how you want. Here’s what I used.

In an optional step, add another layer above the rest, set the forground color to red and background to black and fill it with the clouds filter  filter>render>clouds and then mask it to the shape of the face the same way did the Dried Mud layer, set the blend mode to overlay and opacity to about 50%.

Here’s my Final:

I thought your tutorial looked good but at the 1st step you say double click the background layer in the layers palette – where is the layers palette?
    - where is the background layer?
-it’s okay – computer guys are all the same – they give info to fellow ‘techies’ & can’t be bothered explaining to the rest of us -but I suppose you have to be commended for at least trying
ps – I KNOW photoshop but those little instructions HAVE to be clarified

@ C – Thanks for your comment, I’ve included an FYI to find and open the layers palette. I do try to keep beginners in mind when I write but at some point I ask myself how basic do I need to go and also keep the interest of readers of all levels. No doubt I accidentally leave things out that should have been included. Your feedback will help for future 2torials.

I stumbled on to this page from another website, so I’m abit late in the posting.. Its a good tutorial, and I like the end effect. The only thing I would change is to avoid the blur tool on the edge.. It more or less seems to fade the cracks out to the point where they stick out as a mistake.. Other than that its a great tut.

Oh and one other thing… A reply to the person known as “C”. If you, as you say “KNOW photoshop” then identifying the layers palette should not be an issue what so ever, and Dave shouldn’t be expected to elaborate on something that should only be a problem for a noob. Maybe you should consider brushing up on your photoshop skills…

Thanks for your opinion, and certainly thanks for this tutorial!

I suggest using liquify to make the texture folow the lines of the face better (round it a bit on the nose for example), and I really wouldn’t use that blur. It can be done better by lowering the opacity and flow of the brush when you work on the mask edges…

Yeah, seriously “C”, there’s such a thing as “target audience”. Someone who doesn’t know about the layers palette is not likely to be looking up a tutorial on how to make a zombie face. They’re going to be looking up a tutorial on how to use layers.

  29. Dave said...
    Posted on: 19/Jun/2009 at 10:06

@ Daniel , The eye color is actually the black and white color when you desaturated it at the end of step 4 . I just added a vector mask (located at the bottom of the layers palete) to the mud layer and the red cloud layer and then painted thru to reveal the black and white eye color. Hope this helps!

    This Step
    *****************
When you get it where you want, hit enter to apply and raise the opacity of the dried mud back up to 100%.

With the mud layer selected in the layers palette, Ctrl +click the “thumbnail” of the face layer in the layers palette to create a selection. Apply a layer mask to the mud layer by clicking on the icon an the bottom of the layer palette and set the blend mode to Color Burn.
    **********
or the step before that is really messing me up.
the mudd will not go over the face, it makes a new layer.
and another way i did it made the hair and the rest of the image look cracked, because the mudd was over top of that too. please help. =[ im new to ps. and the version i have is 7.

  33. Dave said...
    Posted on: 7/Jul/2009 at 03:07

@ help, when you bring in the mud picture it should be on it’s own layer ( that’s what you want) when I said over the face layer I mean as it’s listed in the layers palette it should be above the face layer. As for the second problem, you need to mask out the mudd that covers the hair and the rest of the picture: in the layer palette select the mudd layer but ctrl + click the face layer (the thumbnail not the text) to create a selection in the shape of the face then click the mask button at the bottom of the layer palette. Let me know how it worked out.

@C: Have you read technical blogs before? Information is usually accurate, however, minute details generally are not covered. People such as the author of this blog are giving information of their own free time, no warranty expressed or implied. If their goal was to give you every tiny step-by-step detail, they could write a book and probably make some money off of it. Stop being a jerk and thank the person for giving you some information that you didn’t know before.

I am a beginner, I keep getting stuck at the same point.
    I open the document.
In the layers palette it says background, I double click on that and it says Layer 0, which I rename ‘background’
then i select the face with the pen tool, save the path and right click ‘make the selection’

    I copy and invert…
then make a layer mask and the cut out of the face disappears off the body.
I make a new layer, but when I try and paste nothing happens except 3 little anchor points appear but no face!!
    What am I doing wrong???

I can’t get the mask selection to blend with the rest of the picture. I know it has to be something simple but I can’t figure it out…

You can do it in the another way..like make the selection of face then ctrl+shift+c , then make a new layer using ctrl+shift+n, and then ctrl+shift+v…so dat ur cutting area will place above the original face.
